Edits that don't make content yours

The short version

Small changes to someone else's clip still count as unoriginal. Meta names ten of them.

What it means for you

Meta calls this minor editorialization. If these are the only changes you made, the content is unoriginal:

Adding borders. Adding your logo, graphics or watermark. Adding only a caption or title on screen. Adding background music. Changing the speed. Adding subtitles. Describing what happens in text or voiceover. Reaction videos where you just watch along or make faces. Compilations with no story of your own. Adding an intro or outro that doesn't change the viewing experience.

This can apply even to content you have the rights to, like licensed clips. It is a separate system from copyright.

✓ Do

  • Ask: if you removed the original clip, would there still be something worth watching?

✕ Don't

  • Stitch other people's clips together.
  • Post videos with other platforms' watermarks.
  • Rely on speed changes or mirroring to 'make it new'.
